BRIEF INTRODUCTION
At the end of 2010, Marco Polo, the first original dance-drama commissioned by NCPA, was staged for the celebration of her 3rd Anniversary.
The production team of Marco Polo features a luxurious line-up consisting of leading artists at home and abroad, which is sure to yield a masterpiece of great quality. Among those luminaries we have the chief director for the Opening Ceremony of the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, Chen Weiya, as the director, Zhao Daming as the playwright, Zhang Qianyi as the composer and Vladimir Lukasevich in charge of the lighting design for the original version.
Marco Polo is considered the pioneer who connected the civilizations of the East and West. More than 7 centuries ago, the travelogue of his trip to China set off the dream of the mysterious orient country in other parts of the world. However, this dance-drama will not be a simple revival of the travelogue; instead, we approach the gorgeous Chinese culture and varied ethnic character through the story telling of a modern young Italian's dream of ancient China.
The music of the dance-drama employs western music, court music of the Yuan Dynasty, ethnic music of Mongol and the folk music of southern China. Together with the magic of creative multimedia set design, an ancient country of pure beauty and romance is brought back to life. The conception we present here is aiming to convey the belief in peace and harmony which the Chinese nation has insisted throughout history. The dramatic conflict of this dance-drama reaches its climax when it comes to the choice between war or peace and the spirit of humanity shines through the story of the people who sacrifice their own happiness for the peace of the world.
