BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Richard Pontzious
Richard Pontzious is the Artistor Director of Asian Youth Orchestra. He graduated from New York College of Music and thereafter developed the Instruments Department of Saint Mary's University in Tokyo. In 1987 he co-founded Asian Youth Orchestra with the violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, and thereby began his cooperation with prestigious musicians including Yehudi Menuhin, Yo-Yo Ma, Elly Ameling, Lin Zhaoliang and Alicia de Larrocha. The Orchestra was commended by critics as 'an amazing youth orchestra, one of the best in the world'.


In 1980s, Richard became conductor of the famous Symphony Orchestra of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He led the concert tours of the orchestra, giving the Chinese premiere of Prokofiev's Violin Concerto in g minor and the first concert of all Brahms programs after World War II. As the guest conductor of orchestras from Nanjing, Hangzhou, Fuzhou and other cities, he organized the premieres of Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in these cities, conducted a series of Beethoven concerts in Northern China, and laid a foundation for the revival of Harbin Summer Music Festival. For all his contributions, he was called the music missionary in China.


Asian Youth Orchestra
Asian Youth Orchestra has over 100 members, all of whom were selected strictly. Coming from countries and regions including China, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore, they can be called the elites from young musicians.


They meet for six weeks every summer. Led by the music director of the Orchestra and internationally renowned conductors, they give concert tours together with famous artists. Over the past decade, the orchestra has cooperated with well-known cellists like Yo-Yo Ma, Mischa Maisky and Julian Lloyd Webber, well-known violinists like Gidon Kremer, Gil Shaham, Lin Zhaoliang and the legendary Beaux Arts Trio. Yehudi Menuhin, Lukas Foss, Alexander Schneider, Eri Klas, Huang Dade and Sergiu Comissiona have conducted the orchestra.


Asian Youth Orchestra has performed at the venerable Royal Concert Hall in Amsterdam, the private dining room in the White House and the headquarter of the United Nations in New York. Besides, the Orchestra was also invited to perform the overture of Schau-spielhaus Autumn Music Festival in Berlin. Since 1990, the Orchestra has given 157 concerts in 110 cities, receiving over 500 thousand spectators. Every year, about 1,500-2,000 students from 12 countries competed to join it, and once selected, they will be supervised by renowned teachers from Boston Symphony Orchestra, Empire Brass, Harvard University, Houston Symphony, Juilliard School, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
