BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Opulent images, sensuous, enthralling subjects and expressive devotion to movement and dance – the Ballet at the Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz, under the guidance of its director Karl Alfred Schreiner, is able to look back on an exciting and successful first season.

Since the foundation of what was then the Actien-Volkstheater am Gaertnerplatz in 1865, the ballet has been an integral part of the ensemble and has played a decisive part in shaping the Theatre's artistic profile during its eventful history. The company at the Gartnerplatztheater has worked with major ballet directors such as Werner Stammer, Günter Pick, Ivan Sertic, Philip Taylor and Hans-Henning Paar. Karl Alfred Schreiner has been the Artistic Director of the Ballet at the Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz since the 2012/2013 season.

The Ballet of the Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz is synonymous with contemporary dance: the central objective of the artistic work of the company and its director Karl Alfred Schreiner is to develop and bring to perfection an immediate, dynamically forceful language of dance which creates new forms of expression on the foundations of the classical repertoire of movements. Countless first performances (including 'memento mori' with choreography by Edward Clug and Karl Alfred Schreiner, 'Arsenic – a rococo thriller' with choreography by Jo Stromgren) are a testament to the enthusiasm shown by the 20 dancers for the undiscovered, whilst the innovative dance soap 'Minutemade' reflects their fascination with experimentation and improvisation. Alongside this, however, the ensemble also pays tribute to the great masterpieces of the dance repertoire such as Tchaikovsky's 'Sleeping Beauty' (choreography: Karl Alfred Schreiner).

The Ballet of the Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz regularly works with internationally famous guest choreographers. In the 2012/2013 season, for example, Jo Stromgren, Georg Reischl, Cayetano Soto and Mauro Astolfi choreographed for the company. Alexander Ekman, Marco Goecke, Antony Rizzi and Christopher Roman, amongst others, will be providing choreographies during the 2013/2014 season.

However on the ball of Prince's proposal, the Princess who sees the spindle for the first time receives the spindle out of curiosity from Karabosse disguised as an old madam and hurts her finger.
