BRIEF INTRODUCTION

STAATSKAPELLE DRESDEN
Founded in 1548, the Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the oldest orchestras in the world and steeped in tradition. Many distinguished conductors and internationally celebrated instrumentalists have left their mark on this one-time court orchestra, including Carl Maria von Weber, Richard Wagner, Fritz Reiner, Karl Bohm, Rudolf Kempe, Herbert Blomstedt, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Bernard Haitink, Fabio Luisi and etc. Richard Strauss and the Staatskapelle were closely linked for more than sixty years. Nine of the composer’s operas were premiered in Dresden, including Salome, Elektra and Der Rosenkavalier, while Strauss’s Alpine Symphony was dedicated to the orchestra. Since the 2012/2013 season, Christian Thielemann has been Principal Conductor and. Myung-Whun Chung has been Principal Guest Conductor.


CONDUCTOR | Myung-Whun Chung
Myung-Whun Chung is one of the most celebrated conductors in the world today. Since 2001 he has regularly collaborated with the Staatskapelle, conducting the orchestra in numerous concerts, opera performances and on tour. Born in Seoul, he began his musical career as a pianist. In 1979 he became Assistant to Carlo Maria Giulini at Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Five years later he took up the reins at Radio Symphony Orchestra of Saarbrucken and Opera Bastille in Paris, subsequently being appointed Principal Conductor at Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Since 2000 he has been Music Director of Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. In addition, Myung-Whun Chung actively nurtures classical music in his home country and other parts of Asia; currently he is Artistic Advisor to Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. The 2012/2013 season sees Chung assume the position of Principal Guest Conductor to the Staatskapelle, thereby securing an even closer collaboration with the orchestra.


SOPRANO | Hanna-Elisabeth Muller
Hanna-Elisabeth Muller was born in Mannheim and had her first singing lessons at eleven. She studied under Rudolf Piernay at the University of Music Mannheim, with whom she continues to work closely, following her graduation as a soloist. Hanna-Elisabeth has created many impressive roles on opera stage. In 2012 she made her debut at Teatro dell'opera di Roma. Since the 2012/13 season she has been a member of the ensemble of Bavarian State Opera. In 2014 she had a sensational debut at Salzburg Easter Festival alongside Renee Fleming and Thomas Hampson under the baton of Christian Thielemann. The versatile young soprano is also a regular performer in concerts. In 2013 she worked for the first time with Robin Ticciati and Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. In the coming season, she will be a guest with WDR Symphony Orchestra under Jukka Pekka Saraste and Symphony Orchestra of Bayerischer Rundfunk under Sir Simon Rattle.
