BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Originated from old British legend, the drama King Lear is one of Shakespeare's four most famous tragedies. Through the internal disorder of the royal family, the rise and fall of King Lear’s fate and the final punishment of evil powers, Shakespeare expresses his optimistic belief in the future of society, thereby adding the glory of strong idealism to his work.

The drama King Lear will be the first Shakespeare play performed at NCPA in 2017. In honour of the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, NCPA specially invited famous stage director LI Liuyi, screenplay translator YANG Shipeng, costume designer Emi Wada and others to stage this Shakespeare’s classic. In addition, famous performing artist PU Cunxin will portray King Lear, who experiences honor and glory as well as wildness in the play. The three daughters of King Lear will be portrayed by ZHAO Qian, LU Fang and WAN Qianhui, who will present Shakespeare’s three female characters with different personalities on the stage, thereby revealing the battle of power, desire and plotting between King Lear and his daughters, and showing the epic scroll of humanity and profound character analysis of King Lear.

Synopsis
At an advanced age, King Lear decides to divide his vast realm among his three daughters Cordelia, Goneril and Regan. He bids them to declare their love for him to find out who loves him the most. Goneril and Regan speak the sweetest words they can, which pleases him. However, the plain and honest youngest daughter Cordelia speaks what she feels is the truth, and is relentlessly expelled by him.

Cordelia who loses her homeland becomes the queen of France, while the eldest and second daughters who have received vast realms from their father throw him out of the castle. He doesn’t realize his mistake until he has nowhere to go in the wilderness. There, he blames himself for his ignorance and grieves for Cordelia’s bitter experience. The kind-hearted youngest daughter comes back to her father and recalls his ethereal sense with love and forgiveness. There is plotting, betrayal and war between the sisters, and the three daughters die off one by one. In the dark, King Lear looks up to the sky and weeps bitterly, holding the body of his youngest daughter.
