BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France
Founded in the 1930s by French Radio, l’Orchestre Philharmonique was re-established in 1976 at the instigation of Pierre Boulez who strongly advocated more flexibility within the set-up of the traditional symphony orchestra, resulting in an ensemble able to cover all manner of repertoire from the 18th century to the present, be it for smaller chamber forces or large orchestra; such formation depending on the composition of the performed works, but nonetheless each working simultaneously in tandem with the other.

The first music directors of the Orchestra were composer Gilbert Amy and conductor Marek Janowski. After more than 10 years at its helm, Myung-Whun Chung established l’Orchestre Philharmonique as one of Europe’s foremost orchestras. In addition to the time-honoured and revered conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Ton Koopman, l’Orchestre Philharmonique has also worked with many of the brilliant conductors of the new generation: Gustavo Dudamel, Alan Gilbert, Daniel Harding, Vasily Petrenko, Lionel Bringuier and Mikko Franck, who succeeds Myung-Whun Chung in the 2015/16 season.

2015/2016 season also hosted cellist Truls Mork as the Orchestra’s artist-in-residence, and featured the compositions of Magnus Lindberg throughout the year.

Recent years have been marked by numerous successful international tours to all continents. These include performances last season at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Vienna Musikverein, the Rostropovich Festival in Moscow where l’Orchestre Philharmonique return in 2016, China, Korea and Japan.

Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France

Each season, l’Orchestre Philharmonqinue undertakes commissions and performs new works both home-grown in France as well as world premieres, and participates in major contemporary music festivals (Presences, ManiFeste, Festival d'Automne in Paris).

The musicians of the orchestra have had the joy of welcoming many eminent composers to conduct them during their history, including Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Peter Eotvos, George Benjamin, Thomas Ades and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

L’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France has curated for many years, not just an original programme of youth concerts with specially designed projects dedicated to the discovery of classical music, but undertaken workshops by the musicians and of particular significance, organised highlight events which provide an opportunity for many children and youths to perform at major concerts with the Orchestra. The Orchestra also continues to present its "The Keys of the orchestra" series with Jean-Francois Zygel (broadcasted on France 5) and "If Orchestra, Tales" with actors, in collaboration with France Culture.

The close links between l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the country’s national education resulted in many tailor-made projects and courses in arts and cultural education, curated and delivered with the assistance of school-based musicians.
