BRIEF INTRODUCTION

China Opera and Dance Drama Theatre

China Opera and Dance Drama Theatre is a national-level theater affiliated to the Ministry of Culture. It is all-inclusive in artistic categories. It consists of Opera Troupe, Dance Troupe, National Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, Creation Studio and complete Stage Art Production Department.


It converges a large group of famous performing artists such as GUO Lanying, ZHAO Qing and CHEN Ailian, as well as many popular middle-aged and young artists springing up in recent years. Over the past five decades since its inception, it rehearses and performs nearly 100 well-known operas and dance dramas, such as operas The White-haired Girl, Injustice to Dou E and Savage Land and dance dramas A Dream of Red Mansions, Dancing Girl of Tongque Platform and Shadow of Fence Wall. In recent years, it is committed to creating and performing musical dramas, and launches a batch of excellent repertoires such as HUA Mulan. It perfectly undertakes many creation and performance tasks, such as large-scale musical dance epic The East is Red, the Asian Games, International Arts Festival, International Choral Festival and the reception of foreign heads of state including the Former US President Bill Clinton’s visiting China. It organizes and independently sponsors many large-scale national-level variety shows. A variety of singing and dance repertoires are also highly praised by the majority of the audiences in China.

CONDUCTOR: TAN Lihua

TAN Lihua is one of the famous Chinese conductors active in the international and domestic music scenes. He has conducted dozens of outstanding international orchestras on invitation including the Russian National Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, Belgium National Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and Bruckner Symphony Orchestra Austria. He is honoured by the Western media as “a conductor with an elegant and fluent conducting style, consummate skills and a touching artistic charm”.


TAN Lihua served as Conductor of the former Central Philharmonic Orchestra from 1991 to 1995. Now he is the first guest conductor of the China National Symphony Orchestra and a music and artistic consultant to the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theatre. He used to be a member of the 10th, 11th and 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairman of the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Council of Chinese Musicians Association, and Chairman of the Third, Fourth and Fifth Council of Beijing Musicians Association. He is also Deputy Director of the Arts Council of NCPA, and Vice President of the China Symphony Development Foundation. He has been President, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra for 26 years since 1992. From 2001 to 2013, he toured Europe with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra for seven times, causing a sensation there. In 2012, the Dvorak Society, Dvorak Festival and Dvorak Family jointly presented the “Outstanding Artist Award” to him in recognition of his contribution to the premiere of many German musical works in China. In October 2013, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra successfully completed its first American tour, and received an enthusiastic response wherever it went. Its performance was reported under the banner headline “Beijing Symphony Orchestra has started an upsurge of classical music” in the USA’s most widely circulated newspaper The Washington Post.
