BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The Sleeping Beauty, known as a wonder in the treasury of ballet music, is a masterpiece by reintegrating the writing approach of dramatic title symphony into the creation of ballet music, following Swan Lake by the great composer Tchaikovsky.

In April 1829, the Opera national de Paris had staged a drama of The Sleeping Beauty. In 1889 it was revived again on the stage of Russian ballet by Marius Petipa. He left the world around 60 great ballets, including Don Quixote, La Bayadere, and Raymonda, to name a few. Historians generally praised him as a 'Russian ballet founder who turns St. Petersburg into the holy land of world ballet'.

On January 15th, 1890, the premiere of The Sleeping Beauty held at the Mariinsky Theatre was attended by Tsar and a number of dignitaries. During the intermission, Tsar also met with the creators. The Sleeping Beauty has been recognized as a classic Russian ballet and an everlasting show on the stage.

The Russian National Ballet Theatre
The Russian National Ballet Theatre got a new lease of life when it was re-registered and renamed in 2001. However, it is steeped in the ancient ballet tradition of its predecessor Russian Theatre Ballet Ensemble, which was established Oct. 22, 1878.

Boasting more than 60 ballet dancers and a team of celebrated masters of Russian ballet, including People's Artists of the former Soviet Union — Igor Moiseev, R. Struchkova, M. Lavrovsky and Y. Vladimirov, the ballet theater has injected new life into traditional ballet.

Now the theater's repertoire includes not only classical performances such as "Swan Lake," "Nutcracker," "Sleeping Beauty," "Scotland Suite," "Don Quixote," "Romeo and Juliette" and "Gala Concert," but also modern ballets to the music of Mozart, Bach, Ravel and others.

In recent years, the theater has toured many countries including the United States, Spain, Greece, Iceland, Norway and China.
