BRIEF INTRODUCTION

In 1947, the film "Spring River Flows East" made a stunning debut, embodying a profound critical realist spirit and an epic scale that established it as a milestone in Chinese realistic cinema. Set against the historical backdrop of the fourteen-year War of Resistance (1931–1945) and the ensuing post-war turmoil, the film tells the story of an ordinary family's rise, fall, and reunion amidst the torrent of history, portraying the nation's hardships, class divisions, and the ebbs and flows of human nature. The film boasts a grand scale and a strong realist style—sometimes stirring and moving, sometimes like a gentle stream—making it appealing to both refined and popular audiences alike, with enduring depth and resonance.

In 2026, the National Centre for the Performing Arts will transform this cinematic epic into a grand stage production, marking another masterpiece in its "Classic Film Adaptation Series." This theatrical production adheres to the artistic philosophy of "upholding the integrity of cinematic classics while pioneering new aesthetic expressions on stage"; drawing upon a poetic realism as its foundational approach, it delves into the cultural fabric of the Republic of China era and integrates Eastern freehand aesthetics; it skillfully blends contemporary theatrical language with cinematic montage techniques, utilizing intersecting contrasts and spatiotemporal interplay to reflect the joys and sorrows of individual lives against the backdrop of the era's destiny.

On a modest stage, where spring waters surge, light dances in shimmering waves, and the bright moon casts its reflection—a space that transcends physical distance to convey deep emotions—this work celebrates truth, goodness, and beauty while condemning falsehood, evil, and ugliness; by preserving the profound critical spirit of the original film, it stimulates contemporary reflection and serves as a mirror reflecting the conscience of our time.
