Lost Letters breaks the traditional boundary between film and stage dance. Projection is no longer mere backdrop; dance is more than cinematic reproduction. The two art forms echo and extend one another, jointly weaving a narrative about time, memory and love.

Why experience Lost Letters in theatre?

01 She redefined an era with classical ballet
Lucia Lacarra is an internationally‑acclaimed ballet artist celebrated for her precise physical control, distinctive elongated lines and nuanced emotional delivery, forging a unique aesthetic in global ballet circles.

In 2023, she founded Lucia Lacarra Ballet together with Matthew Golding. Moving beyond revivals of traditional classics, she focuses on original storytelling. Blending dance, film, music and theatre, she explores fresh modes for contemporary ballet, translating decades‑long classical‑ballet expertise into her distinctive stage vocabulary.

02 Adapted from a true story: cross century emotional resonance
This is no fictional tale, but undelivered love messages torn by war. It draws inspiration from an exhibition on lost wartime letters held at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum.

Based on real letters written by artilleryman Frank Bracy to his wife Wynn, it explores one woman’s fate: how might her life unfold if she never received the long‑awaited letter from her beloved husband?

03 World class classical ballet technique remains its foundation
Though an original creation, Lost Letters demands supreme classical‑ballet mastery. Abundant pas de deux, lifts, balances, extended‑line phrasing and seamless pirouettes are built upon the technical mastery of principal‑level artists.

Lacarra’s signature control, stretch and musicality are never sacrificed for narrative; instead they gain new expressive power within character‑building. Technique is no longer displayed for show, but becomes a vital vehicle driving relationships and emotional evolution.

04 Some works can only reach full meaning inside the theatre
Lost Letters originates from a concept co‑created for screen and stage. Film projection and live theatre serve separate expressive purposes: the camera captures intimate inner feelings, while live performance reveals dancers’ physicality, breath, spatial dynamics and the flow of real time.

Its full artistic meaning emerges only when projection, music and live performance converge.
Its ingenious stage design builds cinematic montage effects. The production has won multiple honours including Spain’s Canicas Award and Spain’s Golden Gazelle Fine‑Arts Award.
