In 2026, the Martha Graham Dance Company marks its 100th anniversary and launches its global centennial tour.

As America’s oldest modern dance company, it has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and hailed by the media as “one of the Seven Wonders of World Art”. It is also a regular resident benchmark for the world’s top theatres.

The Martha Graham Dance Company stands among America’s most representative modern dance ensembles, with two Emmy Award nominations.

Over the past hundred years, its technical system has become the core curriculum for modern dance education worldwide. It has nurtured masters including Anna Sokolow, Paul Taylor, Donald McKayle and Lar Lubovitch. From stage creation to dance pedagogy, the company has continuously shaped the development of modern dance across America and the globe, serving as an indispensable pillar of international dance art.

Martha Graham: Pioneer of Modern Dance

Martha Graham, pioneer of modern dance, is ranked alongside Picasso and Stravinsky as one of the “Three Great Artists of the 20th Century”. She invented a unique physical vocabulary for modern dance: the Contraction and Release technique based on breathing, endowing the human body with intensified vitality and emotional tension.

President Gerald Ford personally awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, naming her a “national treasure”. She was the first dancer and choreographer to receive this honour. In 1979, she received the Kennedy Center Honors, followed by the National Medal of Arts and other distinguished awards.

Time magazine named her the “Dancer of the Century”, one of the most important dancers of the 20th century. People magazine praised her as “the female model of the century”.
