BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Based on The Ballad of Mulan, a folk poem from the Southern and Northern Dynasties, this drama reinterprets the legendary tale of Mulan taking her father’s place in the army, with percussion music as its core musical form.

Mulan learned spear-fighting from her father since childhood and lived a peaceful life. When foreign invaders attacked and the border was in urgent danger, the imperial court issued an order to conscript Mulan’s father. However, plagued by old injuries, he was unfit for military service.

Mulan disguised herself as a man to buy armour in the market. There she met Hou Dafu, a troop leader. The two got off to a rocky start but soon forged an unbreakable bond. To save her family and defend her homeland, Mulan resolutely donned male attire and took her father’s place in the army.

Upon first arriving at the military camp, Mulan was assigned to the auxiliary troop. She faced suspicion from veteran Zong Ai and contempt from Deputy General An Bang. With Hou Dafu’s help, she defused crises through her cooking skills and quick wits. Moreover, with extraordinary courage, she launched a night raid on the enemy camp, burned their grain supplies, and shot the enemy chieftain, achieving remarkable feats. She won the recognition and promotion of General Sun Han.

After five years of tempering on the battlefield, Mulan rose to Deputy General. In the decisive battle at Daze, she worked hand in hand with Hou Dafu. They ingeniously deployed the oxen fire formation, took advantage of a solar eclipse and fantastic lighting effects, and defeated the enemy with clever tactics, shocking the northern frontier. In the end, they returned home victorious.

Centered on loyalty to country and family, father-daughter affection, camaraderie between fellow soldiers, and youthful growth, the whole play uses lively rhythms and a vivid stage to shape the image of a young heroine — wise, brave, sincere and responsible.
