BRIEF INTRODUCTION
La Fanciulla del West(The Girl of the Golden West) is Puccini's seventh opera. It is ranked as the most mature four opera works by composers, along with Career of the Artist, Tusca and Madame Butterfly. The play is the only major opera to describe California's gold rush so far. The story ends with two lovers riding horses toward the sunset. The theme of music is interspersed with contemporary and local folk music and Indian ballads, which injects a strong regional color into this pure American theme. It vividly depicts the gold rush in the mid-19th century in the Midwest of the United States, connecting the local customs of the East and the West like a needle and thread. At the same time, The Girl of the Golden West is regarded as Puccini's important step from a sweet and long melodic style to a dramatic style with its dramatic short phrases and abundant Symphonic orchestra.
This production is the first Chinese performance of the play. It was created by the new international director Sardius Strasberg and the American creative team. The Italian gifted opera director Batistoni waved his baton and invited three world-class singers, Amari Niza, Marco Birdy and Claudio Sculla, to perform the Golden West together.
Giacomo Puccini
Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) was immensely popular in his own lifetime, and his mature works remain staples in the repertory of most of the world’s opera companies. His operas are celebrated for their mastery of detail, sensitivity to everyday subjects, copious melody, and economy of expression. For the libretto of Fanciulla, Puccini’s publisher recommended the services of Carlo Zangarini (1874–1943), whose mother came from Colorado and who was fluent in English. Puccini found much of Zangarini’s work “truly beautiful” but was frustrated by how slowly he worked, so the author and journalist Guelfo Civinini (1873–1954) was brought in to collaborate. The source play, The Girl of the Golden West, was written and produced on Broadway by the American impresario David Belasco (1853–1931), who was also the author and producer of Madame Butterfly, which Puccini set just before Fanciulla.
