Midnight Rain, is a commissioned work of Gaoyan Jinzi (artistic director of Beijing Modern Dance Company), which was created for Venice Biennale in 2006, and made its debut at Venice Biennale in June, 2006. The play aroused great echoes around Italian art circles, with each performance enjoying a full house. European audiences were marveled at oriental aesthetics and interested in oriental philosophy. The performance thoroughly shot by Italian state television and transmitted on Italian state television for a consecutive week was described as "magnificent and beyond imagination" by the Artistic Director of the Venice Biennial.

With far-reaching cultural meaning and high art appreciation, the play integrates traditional culture and contemporary aesthetics. Five dances prop up the works with personification of flower, bird, fish, insect, and grass applied in scene design by way of styling details and actions to reflect profound, heavy and elegant Chinese culture; great tension are provided in stage image. The choreographer needs strong theatre space sense and good understanding of audience psychology, and also in-depth insights into body texture and movement features of actors. The choreographer carried out perfect interpretation of the whole works.
