BRIEF INTRODUCTION
“Oculus” means “eye” or a round window that acts as the eyes to the outside world. Choreographer Wu Kuo-chu created this dance piece to inspire others to see light and hope despite the different layers of human bondage experienced in the contemporary world.
One of the most-watched young choreographers of his time, Wu was part of Taiwanese choreographer Lin Hwai-min’s Cloud Gate 2 company, founded in 1999 under the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan especially to nurture young talent. The 70-minute “Oculus” was the last full-length piece create by Wu before he passed away in 2006 after a long battle with leukemia.
“Oculus is a landmark work. I want to challenge those that come after Wu,” Lin once said in an interview. "Talent and skill require little translation…Cloud Gate 2 has those virtues, it's only right that they should be shared with the rest of the world," declares The New York Times about Cloud Gate 2.
