BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The Hitweek concept was born in 2007 out of the conviction that there is space for Italian music in the world beyond the classic idea of pizza, mandolin and operetta. The goal of Hitweek was to change outdated preconceptions about modern Italian culture - to convey to the world the present and the future of Italian music, together with real Italian lifestyle connected to the creativity: art, cinema, design, food and beverage trends etc.

For its first year, 2009 in Los Angeles, Hitweek packed a huge cast of top Italian artists into its lineup and was a commercial and critical success as American crowds became intrigued by this new image of Italian popular music and lifestyle. Building on this success the organisers incorporated New York into the festival for 2010 and, in turn added Miami in 2011.

In 2011 the organisers of Hitweek attended the event China Sounds (Midem 2011, Shenzhen Cultural Industries fair 2012) which sought to offer a similar insight into Chinese music and culture. Recognising the evident similarities of goals and spirit, the concept of Hitweek China was quickly born. To be held both in China and Italy in 2012 Hitweek China will present the best of both nations’ music to each other, in the name of breaking down preconceptions and encouraging cultural exchange between the two countries. As two nations with deep cultural heritage, but lacking recognition in the sphere of modern culture, Italy and China share very a similar agenda for promoting their international identities.
