BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Among Piazzolla’s numerous followers, the one that really carried forward tango and accordion music should be Richard Galliano. Galliano did for European folk—specifically, the early-20th-century French ballroom dance form known as musette—what his mentor Astor Piazzolla did for the Argentinean tango. In 1983, Piazzolla invited Galliano to be the bandoneon soloist at the Comedie Francaise in his original music to accompany William Shakespeare’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, which was the starting point of their decade-long friendship that lasted till Piazzolla passed away in 1992.
Galliano is Piazzolla’s last student. He toured around the world between 1980 and 2003 performing with many excellent musicians, during which he also composed quite a lot of works that has been well received by the media and the public. In 1991, Richard Galliano created the “New Musette” style, and thereafter received numerous prizes such as the best jazz musician of the year. In 2002, the 10th anniversary of Piazzolla’s death, Galliano toured around the world with his septet performing concerts in honor of Piazzolla, and released the recording of the concerts named “Piazzolla Forever”, which was an immediate success.
This year, 2012, being the 20th anniversary of Piazzolla’s death, Richard Galliano and his septet set out on tour again in February to commemorate Piazzolla, both a mentor and a friend, and in September they will come over to give their premiere performance in China. They will perform in Guangzhou, Changsha, Shanghai, Wuhan, Xi’an, Beijing and Shenzhen. In October last year, Galliano has already been to China with his quartet. This time, with the quartet turned into septet, the performance is sure to be more splendid and exciting.
