BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1986 with the aim of becoming one of the first-class symphony orchestras in the world, the Taiwan Philharmonic has become one of the top symphony orchestras in Asia. The orchestra became an artistic affiliate of the “National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center” in 2005. Since its establishment, the orchestra has given thousands of concerts, launched many education programs, and hosted several music activities.
The orchestra’s “Discovery Series” concerts explored a wide range of repertoire, including the orchestral cycles of Beethoven, Mahler, Shostakovich, R. Strauss and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra not only continues to build an extensive repertoire from classical to contemporary music, but also set a number of precedents in music production in the Island by dedicating itself to cross-over music productions and performances with such projects as “NSO Opera” and “Fairy Tales Forever”, in which the orchestra worked in conjunction with local theatres. The locally produced Der Ring des Nibelungen and Der Rosenkavalier collaborated with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, have set records in opera production in the music history of Taiwan. Starting August 2010, Maestro Shao-Chia Lu has been Music Director of the orchestra.
