SYNOPSIS

Act I

First Scene: Cigar Factory

The women prepare themselves to start their daily work at the Factory. Carmen, as always arrives late and antagonizes the group with insults and fighting with the owner. The fight intensifies until Carmen draws a knife and cut the owner on the back.
One of the girls runs out calling an officer. He arrives with three soldiers, one of them is José, who ties Carmen up and takes her to jail.


Second Scene: The Jail

Carmen uses all her allure to seduce José and asks him to help her escape. José is unmoved and guards the prison. Micaela, a peasant girl, who knows José from their hometown, arrives bringing a letter from José’s mother, who begs him to marry Micaela and to return home. José refuses, as he is very attracted to Carmen, who witnesses this scene from her jail cell. Carmen continues her harassment, until José relents and unties the rope that binds her. Carmen simulates a fainting spell. When José sees Carmen on the floor, he rushes to her aid, leaving the cell door open; Carmen slips through the door, throwing him a red rose as she exits.
Ballet De Santiago - Carmen The officer arrives with his soldiers and realizing Carmen has escaped, berates José and locks him in a jail cell.
Carmen sends two gypsies to break José out of jail and they escape towards the mountains. José has no choice, but to desert his post and join the smugglers.


Thirs Scene: The Mountain

Carmen hides out at the smugglers and gypsy camp in the mountains. José arrives looking for her Carmen, using the cards to see her destiny, turns over the Death card, as José appears to profess his love. A gypsy enters, announcing the arrival of an officer to arrest José. She helps to hide him. To distract the officer, Carmen begins to seduce the man with provocative movements. Seeing this, José is enraged with jealousy and attacks the officer, killing him. This proves to Carmen that José has fallen in love with her.


Intermission

Act II

First Scene: Lilas Pastia's Tavern

Several months have passed and Carmen is already bored in her relationship with José. Carmen is at the tavern with her friends, when Escamillo; a famous bullfighter arrives and is instantly attracted to Carmen. Carmen displays her charms by dancing and flirting with Escamillo. As José watches this scenario he is overcome with jealousy and puts himself between them to disrupt their flirtation. Nonplussed by this, Escamillo invites everyone to be his guests at the next bullfight.
Ballet De Santiago - Carmen Against José's wishes, Carmen decide to follow Escamillo. José remains alone and devastated.


Second Scene: The Mountain

The Smugglers take José to their hide-out in the mountains. Micaela comes looking for him, with news that his mother in very sick and longs to see him. She begs him to return with her. José can only think of Carmen, who is now with Escamillo. In his desperation he ignores the pleas of his mother and races off to the city.
José listens to the cheers of the crowd for the bullfighter and sees that Carmen is part of his entourage.


Third Scene: Bullfighting Arena

José confronts Carmen and implores her to forget the past and start a new life with him, but she refuses. While the crowd is heard cheering on the bullfighter, José fights with Carmen and attempts to prevent her joining her new lover. In a pique of rage, Carmen furiously rejects José and in a moment of despair, draws his knife and fatally stabs her.
