BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Desolate and boundless field, symbolic stage forms, and a group of people who are fighting against destiny. It is the stage of the classic drama of Wilderness performed by Tianjin People's Art Theatre.

The Wilderness was a classic work of Cao Yu, one of the greatest dramatists in the history of Chinese modern literature. The artistic methods of expressionism and symbolism were used by Maetsto Cao Yu, presenting a strong sense of mystery. The style of the Wilderness is different from Cao Yu's other masterpieces, such as Thunderstorm, Sunrise and Peking Man. In the Wilderness, a seemingly simple revenge story contains wide and deep feelings and displays complex and distinct human characters. It, on one hand, reveals the darkness of the feudal society and expresses the tortured peasants' wishes for good life; on the other hand, it explores the complexity of humanity in a deeper way.

In the director Wang Yansong's version, the image of 'black forest' is replaced by that of 'pottery figurines'. It is amazing to see that the pottery figurines, which resemble the chorus from ancient Greek tragedies, appear at the beginning and end of the drama as witnesses of the death of Jiao Daxing, Heizi and Qiu Hu.

SYNOPSIS
The story took place in a village in northern China in 1930s. In the autumn filed, a shabbily dressed and tired middle-aged man went to the house of Tyrant Jiao, who was already dead. He was Qiu Hu. Jiao Shi, the wife of Tyrant Jiao worried about Qiu Hu's arrival. Years ago Tyrant Jiao had killed Qiu Hu's father and his younger sister, occupied their properties as well as Qiu Hu's fiancé Jinzi, broke one leg of Qiu Hu and put him into prison. Qiu Hu's arrival stirred the Jiao Family just like a big stone thrown into peaceful water. Thereby a story of revenge started on the filed, with complicated feelings about love and hatred.
