BRIEF INTRODUCTION

To Live is a new realism masterpiece created by Yu Hua, a Chinese representative avant-garde novelist. His work follows a countryside old man's life memories as a clue, and profoundly demonstrates great vicissitudes of the times and the joys and sorrows. Director Meng Jinghui and writer Yu Hua conduct many in-depth discussions in terms of ideology and art, and both enjoys highly ideological echo, reach a consensus and try to introduce human dignity and the respect for life in quiet and peaceful way. This drama is directed by Meng Jinghui, famous avant-garde director of National Theatre of China, and starred by famous competent actor Huang Bo and famous actress Yuan Quan.


SYNOPSIS

Fugui, a landlord's son, is immersed in gambling. He finally ruins family business, and exasperates his father to death. His wife Jiazhen repeatedly persuades him to no avail, and says goodbye to him with the daughter Fengxia. Fugui is merely forced to rely on the sale of mother jewelry and rents a shack as residence. A year later, Jiazhen takes Fengxia and holds the newborn son Youqing in the arms to return home. The repentant Fugui begins to make a living with shadow play, and he keeps on the rails. But good times don't last long. During the Civil War of China, Fugui is arrested by KMT to labor. After several twists and turns, he finally returns home and realizes family reunion. But Fengxia becomes dumb due to illness. In subsequent 'Great Leap Forward' and 'the Cultural Revolution', he enjoys some minor blessings, but adversity always accompanies him. In the end, accompanied by an old ox, Fugui gives retrospect to his lifetime under the sun...
