BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The Chinese Orphan tells the story of the aristocratic family Zhao's being framed to death by Tu Angu, a treacherous official in the Spring & Autumn Period and the survival orphan Zhao Wu's revenge for his family when he grows up. The work has been interpreted through sorts of stage arts. The great French writer Voltaire once adapted this story into a play titled L'orphelin de la Maison de Tchao (The Chinese Orphan). It was introduced to the western world and has been popular ever since. In 2010, the film Sacrifice (Zhao Shi Gu Er)directed by Chen Kaige caused a great sensation.

In 2011, the well-known 'golden partners' playwright Zou Jingzhi and composer Lei Lei joined again to tailor for NCPA the original opera The Chinese Orphan. The reason why they focus on the historical theme for one more time is that they wish to restore the classicism, and highlight the Chinese nation's value of sacrificing life for justice, and to promote Chinese culture with the righteous traditional spirits to the whole world.

SYNOPSIS

The story is set in the Jin State during the Spring and Autumn Period, the vicious minister Tu Angu can not get along with the loyal minister Zhao Dun. He devises a scheme and causes the King of Jin to kill the whole clan of Zhao's family of a total of 300 people.

Zhao's daughter-in-law, Princess Zhuang Ji, who is excluded from the massacre, has given birth to a child. Failing to beg humble the doctor Cheng Ying to protect her son, the princess commits suicide. Cheng Ying is deeply moved and finally promises to save the Zhao lineage. Tu learns that the orphan has been out of the palace. He orders to kill all the babies in the state within three days. After a discussion with Gongsun Chujiu, a loyal but elder minister of the Jin State, Cheng decides to sacrifice his own son and Gongsun sacrifices himself to save the orphan and other babies. Then Tu takes the orphan as his adopted son. Cheng does not tell anyone about the truth and suffers the misunderstanding of disloyalty for 18 years.
